ORIGAMI

"Bouquet of Flowers" by Nicolas Garcia (a gift for his teacher)
(Materials Used: paper)

Origami from ori meaning "folding", and kami meaning "paper") is the traditional Japanese folk art of paper folding which started in the 17th century AD and was popularized in the mid-1900s. It has since then evolved into a modern art form. The goal of this art is to transform a flat sheet of material into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques, and as such the use of cuts or glue are not considered to be origami.

MATCHBOX SUPPORT

Thirty and so many years ago, my brother and I excitedly asked our mother, "Are we going to the dentist?"  We loved going to the dentist.  Why?  Because our mom bought us an ice cream cone and a Matchbox toy car every time a tooth was removed.
Today, I had a tooth extracted and for some reason the anesthesia did not entirely work its wonder. Another dentist had to assist the lead dentist by holding my jaw.  She said, "I'll be here for molar support."
Today, I wanted to get an ice cream cone and a Matchbox.  How I wish my mother were here.

H-A-R-A-K-I-R-I

We talked about samurai warriors and the honor in the manner they die through harakiri.  As I demoed the act of harakiri, Nicolas asked, "What letter or word can you write with the sword? Can you spell your name?"

Seppuku ("stomach-cutting") is a form of Japanese ritual suicide by disembowelment.  Seppuku was originally reserved only for samurai.  Part of the samurai honor code, seppuku was used voluntarily by samurai to die with honor rather than fall into the hands of their enemies, as a form of capital punishment for samurai who have committed serious offenses, or performed for other reasons that have brought shame to them.  The most famous form of seppuku is also known as 'harakiri' ("cutting the belly").  The ceremonial disembowelment, which is usually part of a more elaborate ritual and performed in front of spectators, consists of plunging a short blade, traditionally a tanto, into the abdomen and moving the blade from left to right in a slicing motion.

KIRIGAMI

"Kirigami" by Nicolas Garcia
(Materials Used: paper and scissors)

Kirigami is a variation of origami that includes cutting of the paper (from Japanese "kiru" = to cut, "kami" = paper).  Typically, kirigami starts with a folded base, which is then cut; cuts are then opened and flattened to make the finished kirigami.  Kirigami are usually symmetrical, such as snowflakes, pentagrams, or orchid blossoms.

1+1...Magellan: 2+2...

On his first trip to Cebu, Nicolas remarked, "I'm so sad for Magellan.  A big fish killed him."

The Battle of Mactan was fought in the Philippines on April 27, 1521. The warriors of Lapu-Lapu, a native Muslim chieftain of Mactan Island, defeated Christian soldiers under the command of Ferdinand Magellan.
